What Documents Do I Need to Keep Stored in My Glove Compartment?

A lot of drivers keep their car’s glove box stuffed with road trip snacks and purchase receipts, but this compartment is also a handy place to store important documentation. Owning a car comes with a lot of paperwork, and while some of it can be stored at home, there are certain documents you should always keep with you while on the road. Proof of Insurance

Keeping proof of insurance in your vehicle is not only vital in the event of an accident, but it is also required by the law. The state of Texas requires drivers to carry liability coverage in order to prove that medical expenses and mechanical repairs can be covered in case of an accident. Failure to provide up-to-date proof of coverage could result in serious fines.

Vehicle Registration

The vehicle registration proves that you have officially registered your vehicle with a government authority and paid the pertinent taxes. If you get pulled over by a police officer with an expired registration, you could have to pay a penalty. Still, it’s recommendable to store a copy on your glove compartment and keep the original document safe at home.

Owner’s Manual

Keeping your owner’s manual in the glove box is not required by the law, but it is a good idea. This book contains important information about your vehicle, including maintenance and troubleshooting advice. It can be especially useful in case a technical issue occurs while on the road, like a flat tire or a warning light popping up on your dashboard.

You can also consider keeping a list of emergency contacts and important medical information in the glove box in the event of a serious accident. Other car-related documents, like your vehicle title and maintenance records, are better left at home in a secure location.
